Vetting Methodology

How we vet every roofing contractor in our network.

A short answer up front: every contractor is verified across six criteria before they take their first lead, and re-verified every 90 days. The full process is below.

The six verification criteria

1. Active state licenseVerified directly against the state contractor licensing board for license number, status, and disciplinary history.
2. Years in businessMinimum 5 years under current ownership. Verified via state business filings and online presence age.
3. General liability insuranceCertificate of insurance on file. Minimum $1M per-occurrence coverage. Reviewed annually and at renewal.
4. Workers' compensationActive workers' comp coverage required for all roofers with employees. Verified through the carrier or state fund.
5. Review averageMinimum 4.5★ average rating across Google and Better Business Bureau combined, with at least 25 total reviews.
6. Complaint historyNo active legal complaints, BBB cases, or pattern of unresolved customer issues. Reviewed at every quarterly check.

The vetting process, step by step

  1. Application. Contractor submits company info, license number, insurance certificates, and references.
  2. License verification. We pull the license record directly from the state board.
  3. Insurance verification. We confirm certificates with the listed carriers and check expiration dates.
  4. Reputation check. We pull aggregate review data from Google, BBB, and where applicable, Yelp and Angi.
  5. Complaint search. We check court records and BBB complaint logs.
  6. Network agreement. Contractor agrees to our service standards: response time, quote honesty, and no high-pressure sales.

What happens if standards slip

We re-verify every contractor every 90 days. If any of the criteria fall out of standard — license expires, insurance lapses, review average drops, complaints accumulate — the contractor is suspended from receiving leads until the issue is resolved. Repeated or unresolved issues result in permanent removal.

Frequently asked questions

How does RoofQuoteHQ verify a contractor's license?
We verify each contractor's license number directly against the state contractor licensing board for the state in which they operate. Verification includes status (active vs. expired), license type, and any disciplinary history.
What insurance do contractors need to carry?
Every contractor in our network must carry both general liability insurance (minimum $1M per-occurrence) and workers' compensation coverage. Certificates of insurance are reviewed annually and updated continuously as policies renew.
Can a contractor lose their network status?
Yes. Contractors are removed for: license lapse or suspension, insurance lapse, drop below 4.5★ average rating, unresolved BBB complaints, repeated homeowner complaints to RoofQuoteHQ, or any documented misrepresentation.
How often is vetting refreshed?
Every contractor is re-verified quarterly. License status, insurance, and review averages are re-checked at minimum every 90 days. Major issues (license suspension, large complaint surge) are flagged in real time.
Is there a public list of vetted contractors?
No. We don't operate as a directory. Each homeowner request is matched with one specific vetted contractor based on service area, project type, and current capacity — not a list to choose from.
